Picture this (pun absolutely intended)…you hang artwork on your wall, step back, and realize it is to low, or worse, too high. And now there is a hole in the wall that is exposed for everyone to see. Hanging artwork shouldn’t be like hammering in the dark.
Our clients are often afraid to start hanging artwork. They don’t want to create a hole in the wrong place. And we don’t blame them! Especially when a home has been freshly painted.
Therefore, we are taking out the guesswork and providing our top tips when hanging individual art pieces, gallery walls, and more!
The Highlights:
HANGING HEIGHT

Most of the time, people have the tendency to hang art too high. The rule of thumb is to hang your piece with its midpoint between 57″ and 60″ from the floor. This is around eye level.
Keep in mind that this only applies to artwork hung on a standalone wall. It also applies to a large area like the built-ins featured in the above image.
HANGING ABOVE FURNITURE

The size of your art should be 1/2 to 2/3 the size of your furniture below. This includes groupings like a gallery wall. Consider a grouping as one unit.
VARIETY VERSES IDENTICAL SHAPES

Using a variety of shapes in a grouping can add a lot of interest to your gallery wall.
Using similar objects, like the same frames, can add structure and simplicity to your gallery wall.
Either way, be sure that your pieces are no more than 4″ apart. They need to connect with and anchor one another.
HANGING HARDWARE

If you do not want to put a hole in your wall, using Velcro strips is a good choice. They are suitable if your art is lightweight.
If your artwork or objects are very heavy, be sure to use anchors in your wall.
Use rubber bumpers on your pieces. This helps level your art and also stop it from sliding sideways on the wall.
Have fun with it and enjoy your art! Also, don’t forget to use a level, no one wants crooked art!
