Paint colors are the most tricky part of designing (even for a seasoned designer like me).

In fact, while choosing interior home paint colors there are numerous things that affect how a color looks.

  • direct sunlight
  • artificial lighting
  • colors and tones of items surrounding the space
  • reflective value of the paint
  • colors from other rooms

At Taylor Eileen Designs, we help clients sift through all of these barriers. As a result, you find paint colors that not only work with your style, but also with your environment.

Ideally, you will want large paint swatches, not the small, underwhelming ones you get from the paint store.

That’s where we come in. We offer Paint Color Consultations for local Chicago residents as well as overnight large swatches to remote clients. No more buying 3+ sample containers and painting your walls to test paints.

Once you have your large paint swatches, here is what you need to do-

Tape the first paint color swatch on the wall in the corresponding room. If you have white trim, place the swatch up against it. This way, you will see the true undertones of the color in comparison to white. If you don’t have pure white trim, grab a piece of white copy paper and place the swatch on there.

Then, with the next suggested paint color, place the swatch next to the first paint swatch. Be sure to stay against the white trim or on white copy paper.

Once you have placed all paint swatches on the wall, stand back. See if you can read the undertones that are coming off the colors. Due to the lighting and environment, these undertones make swatches appear more green, violet, yellow, gray, etc.

Keep these paint swatches on the wall for the next day or two. Look at
them during morning light, noon light, and evening light with and
without overhead lighting on. Note any new undertones that are
coming through. Then, move the paint swatches to another wall in the space. Repeat step #5. Continue repeating steps 5-6 until you have found the color that you love 75% or more of the time.

In conclusion, with these tips, you will be able to choose the right paint colors for your home. No second guessing, no mistakes.
